 Chat Room Help

The Basics

The purpose of a chat channel is to meet other people around the world with similar interests. Thousands of channels exist around the world. Chatting can be both fun and a learning experience. As you get used to chatting, it will become even more enjoyable and interesting. You will learn new things about your interests, and about other people.

Frequently Asked Questions

Think of a channel as if you were standing in a room full of people. You must keep your chat appropriate. Keep in mind that they cannot see you, so you must describe things more clearly with your words.

As a new comer to chat, there are many different questions you may have. If you have any questions that are not covered here, feel free to ask them while chatting.

Some questions commonly asked by newcomers:

Q: What do I do if a user is bothering me?
A: If you type /ignore <nickname> anything that that user types, will not be shown to you, and will be ignored. If this problem persists, you could talk to one of the channel operators for a resolution to this situation.

Q: What does IRC stand for?
A: Internet Relay Chat

How to connect to the chat channel:

Their are two ways to connect to the chat channel. The easiest way to connect is using JAVA chat. The recommended way is to use a program such as Mirc. Mirc is much more stable than JAVA and offers many more features and options.

Using JAVA to connect:

To connect using JAVA chat, you must have a JAVA enabled web browser. Following the links on Studentpilot.com will bring you to the chat screen. You must choose a nickname and then choose connect.

Using an IRC program to connect:

You will need to download an IRC program, we recommend using mIRC which is available from http://www.mirc.com. mIRC may take some time to learn how to use at first, but once you get it running, it is very easy to use, and has many more features than JAVA chat.

Once you have downloaded mIRC, run setup to install it. The first time you run Mirc, it will come up with a window telling about the creator, close the window using the X at the top right corner of the window. Once you have done that, a window titled "Mirc Setup" will open, fill in at the fields at the bottom of this window. Then at the top, click the "ADD" button and fill in the following field with the following information:

    Description: Student Pilot Chat
    IRC Server: irc.webmaster.com
    Port: 6667

Once you have done this, click the "ADD" button and then click the button that says "Connect To IRC Server!". Once you have connected to the IRC server, a window will pop up asking what chat channel you want to join, type #studentpilot
