It ain't so bad as long as you have your IR rating....

On a side note....they had the founder of Cirrus on a Small Business radio talk show last week and he stated that since the Cirrus has a ballistic parachute....anyone can fly with without worry of an aircraft safety issue.....

So with thinking like that......who needs insurance anyways??

Same as in Belgium... we have both in our flight school and the difference is:

    SR-20 = 175 EUR/hour
    SR-22 = 237 EUR/hour

    But then again:

    YAK-52 = 170 EUR/hour

    BANG for the BUCK!

Now, why in the world is it ~more~ expensive to insure an SR20 as an instrument-rated pilot with 500 hours or an instrument-rated commercial pilot with 1000 hours than it is as a non-instrument-rated pilot with 200 hours? That just doesn't make sense.

It seems to be more logical when considering insurance on the SR22 and GTS.

They've got to have a couple numbers reversed there. If not, they need to get USAIG quotes for everything across the board for comparison purposes.

For an SR20, a private pilot only with 200 hours is $2309.

Private and instrument with 500 hours for $3280???

Those two numbers have got to be reversed. The quotes usually go down as ratings and hours increase.

For the SR20, the numbers are lower for the lower hours and no instrument rating, which is opposite of the SR22 and GTS quotes.

They're also offering $6k toward insurance (SR22) if you are a student pilot or someone with fewer than 250 hrs. You guys better hurry up and buy one!! j/k

Personally, I see nothing wrong with the SR20. No one seems to buy them, though.

While the quotes for some 'look' reversed, I dont think they are. Just look at the commercial quotes being higher as well. I think a lot of insurance companies know, that while pilots are obviously more experienced when they get their IFR, they will also put themselves in more risk in IFR (being in IMC and losing an engine/etc).

Having recently discussed insurance with Cirrus...

I'll tell you those numbers have undisclosed 'clauses' attached to them. Cirrus encourages lower time pilots to take addendums to their insurance such as if you're below 500TT, you can't take the plane into IMC until you have 100 Time in Type. (This was recommeded by the sales guy for me) On a new SR22 I was looking about a proposed 1st year of about 6k, with two riders. One was that I'd get 100TT in VFR before entering IMC, the second was to complete the IR, which Cirrus would pay for and the balance would be paid the the insurance company as a seller credit. Basically you need 100 Time in Type to get realistic insurance, once you have that you'll be in good shape on insurance. You should still budget about $4,000/yr though, the GTS will/may be higher.

I talked to a friend of mine the other day who owns a year old Baron. He is a 7000 hr pilot with IFR rating(obviously) and his insurance on the Baron is $21K/yr. I guess if you can afford to own a new Baron you can afford to pay that. Most of his flying is business so he can deduct it...

Multi insurance is always pricy, and for a brand new aircraft it's even worse. I bet your friend also has to do recurrent training with FS or ATP every year or six months.

Insurance really ticks me off. They're the sole reason why I don't instruct independently on the side. I can't afford the insurance, charge a reasonable rate and make some extra cash (granted, I'm not in it for the money, but it's not going to be a loosing endeavor)
