I'm in the group that says you need to have riding gear on at all times. At a minimum a helmet, but preferably a full-face helmet. Yeah, they're a bit hotter in warm weather, but it beats having a mangled face for the rest of your life because you lost it going around a corner.
I think gloves, an armored (or at least a leather) jacket are mandatory. So are pants, even if they're jeans, don't ride in shorts. Shoes are also mandatory, no sandals or flip-flops. Eye protection is a must, too, if you don't have a visored helmet.
Too many people think they are "better riders" than the average guy and end up eating pavement. I bet 95%+ of the guys who've dropped the bike started wearing or have kept wearing their safety gear from that point forward.
In general, though, the design of the nut that connects the yoke and the seat has proven to be the critical factor in flight safety.
