What is the coolest site you have seen while flying?
What is the coolest site you have seen while flying? Up until a few weeks ago for me I would have to say an old civil war munitions building, the chicago lakeshore or a corn maze. But, I recently flew over a shipwreck which was a great site and might be my new favorite (Photos available on myflightblog.com)

my coolest sight, thus far, has to be looking at the top of the windscreen and seeing a lake - Ghost Lake to be precise, and this was during my spin training.
It doesn't quite compare to a shipwreck, but the idea of looking up at the ceiling of a Cessna 172 and seeing the sparkling surface of a lake, combined with the forces of a spin created an experience now burned in my memory

I would have to say three occasions, one, being in the pattern with an F-22, being in the pattern with a B-1B, and being in the pattern with the Blue Angels!

The coolest thing i've ever seen is the northern lights, a rare sight where i'm at. Another would probably be a takeoff in a 172 at Dulles. i was at 1000 ft midway down the runway, and i got to see a British Airways 747-400 at the gate (among countless other aircraft of all sizes)

during freefall at 130 mph (well skydiving is kinda flying - your body), the twin otter id just exited from was parallel with me in a vertical dive, and the sunset was to the right of the plane....lovely view.

Another anonymous tower controller:
ABC123: "XYZ Ground, ABC123 off of runway 32."
Controller: "ABC123, XYZ Ground, taxi to the gate via Delta, Whiskey, Whiskey 7, Alpha, Delta, Quebec, say the gate number."
ABC123: "Roger, taxi via Delta, Whiskey, Whiskey 7, Alpha, Delta, Quebec, Gate is Foxtrot 11." (With F11 being the gate, the route is everything except Quebec at the end, so controller responds with....)
Controller: "ABC123, roger. That is correct except knock the Quebec off of it."
The coolest thing... Well, in 1977 while flying from San Antonio to Denver, there was this cute stewardess that... oh, you mean things you might see out of the window?
Never mind.
During my last Atlantic crossing watching the sunrise as we were approaching the coast of Spain, we observed the 'green flash' phenomenon.
Crossing India at night and as we were observing a line of severe weather, we watched as lightening spiked out of the top of thunderstorms into the clear night sky above.
Deadheading a Falcon 10 from BFI (Seattle) to APA (Centennial) at FL410 we overheard ATC talking to an AF tanker and Aspen 31 (call sign for SR-71), clearing them both into a refueling track. We asked where the tanker/SR-71 were located and ATC informed us they were 40 miles ahead of us at FL280. We requested and ATC cleared us to FL290. We did a rapid descent in time to see the SR-71 plugged into a KC-10 tanker as they passed 1000' below us. That, would have been a Kodak moment!
Flying a Falcon 10 in formation with another Falcon 10 from DEN to GYR (Phoenix-Goodyear) twice in one day and getting some great air to air pics.
Seeing the space shuttle on the back of it's 747 transporter as it made a low pass at the former Stapleton (DEN) airport and then came in for a landing.
Watching St. Elmo's fire while flying a Cessna T310R through dry snow at night. Props had rings of static, 12" long purple arcs from leading edge of tip tanks and static dancing all over the top of engine cowlings.

Somewhere around my 4th-5th lesson, the airport I train out of was holding an air show and a fair number of vintage aircraft owners flew their planes in the morning of the show.
I had a lesson scheduled early morning and given all the expected activity we decided to fly-out to another airport's practice area. Enroute we saw a P51 fly past us (about 500" or so above us).
Never forget that sight, felt like I had transported back in time.
did a fly-by of mount rushmore on a trip i took to sioux falls, SD and rapid city, SD. that was pretty slick. i've seen the northern lights, too, from the air. i was giving a night XC to my student and we saw them, so i turned off all the lights except for the position lights (it was valley city, ND at 10pm in november, give me a break) and we did a couple racetracks so we could see it from both sides. it was so bright that it lit up the entire sky....then, as soon as it had started, it went away. that was neat.

and you're right - that picture is pretty cool. the cloud shadows on the mountain are really neat. it's not too often that you look out and see the clouds AND the shadows approximately at your altitude.
