What you need to know from the start.
There are many things that you must commit to starting out in aviation. The most important commitment is the time commitment. Typically, it is suggested that Student Pilots schedule flight lessons three days a week for one hour time slots. Consistently coming to all of your lessons is important: Excessive time inbetween lessons leads to forgetting material, which leads to more dollars spent on lessons in the long run. It is also expected that a student will take ground school on the side (or spend their own time studying material at home).
Typical costs to receive a Private Pilot License.
The cost to attain a Pilot License can vary greatly from person to person. A minimum of 40 hours of flight time is required to receive a license, but some people need up to 70 hours of flight training. Depending on the area you are in, prices can vary from $75.00/hr for flight time to over $120.00/hr for flight time. Typically, cities tend to have higher prices and suburbs have much lower prices for lessons.
The purchase of a headset is required by many flight schools. Headsets can be purchased for as little as $100.00 but you may want to spend a little more. A high quality $300.00 headset is a good investment because you will use it for years. Cheaper headsets may not stand the test of time.
Text books are required by most ground schools. They are usually in the $100.00 range for the set. Most Ground schools will give you a deal if you sign up for the course and purchase the books at the same time. Package deals are usually in the $250 to $350 range. If you don't plan to take ground school you should still purchase the books so you can study on your own at home.
Flight bags can range anywhere from $50.00 to $300.00 If you are on a limited budget you can easily find a flight bag in your range, you just have to shop around.
Supplemental pilot supplies that will save you money in the long run.
Study, study study. Either by reading the books or by watching videos. King Schools and Sporty's both sell videos geared toward student pilots. These videos teach you the basics of communications, stalls, maneuvers, weather, take offs and landings as well as much, much, more. This $100+ investment will save you money in the long run. If you go to your flight lesson prepared, you will spend less time with the basics and will get into more advanced material sooner.
Pilots supplies that will enhance your skills.
When learning to fly in controlled airspace a lot is required of you that isn't when flying at an uncontrolled airport. Learning to communicate on a radio clearly and effectively will get you off to the right start. It is suggested by many flight instructors that you purchase a transceiver early on. With this transceiver you can listen in on radio conversations of other pilots, and can learn the lingo. The transceiver will also be a useful investment to have just incase your radio fails while in flight. A backup is always good to have. |
